How to get more Google reviews without begging or buying them

The business above you is probably not better. It probably asks. A link, a card on the counter, one sentence at the right moment, and you get more reviews this month than last year.

When we compare a listing to the three ahead of it, review pace is the gap we see most: not the total, the number of new reviews this month. The business on top is getting six. The one in fifth place got one.

The difference is rarely the quality of the haircut. It is that one of them asks, every time, and makes it easy.

Get your review link

Sign in to your Google Business Profile, open “Ask for reviews”, and copy the link. It opens straight onto the “write a review” box, no searching, no scrolling. Anyone who has to find your listing themselves will not.

Put it in three places

  • A card on the counter with a QR code that opens the link. Any free QR generator works.
  • A message after the visit, the same day: “Thanks for coming in today. If you have a minute, a review helps us more than you would think: [link]”. One sentence, no pressure.
  • Your email signature and your receipts, if you send them.

Ask everyone, not just the happy ones you are sure of. A steady flow of honest reviews, some of them four stars, looks more real to Google and to customers than a burst of five-star reviews from people with no other activity.

How many reviews a month do you actually need to catch the business above you? That is a number, and it is different for every street. See what Watch would tell you about your listing, $29 a month.

What not to do

  • No discounts or gifts for a review. It is against Google’s rules, and it is the kind of thing a competitor reports.
  • No review stations in the shop where customers write from your Wi-Fi. Google sees dozens of reviews from one place and filters them.
  • No buying. Bought reviews come from accounts that review a dentist in Leeds and a taco place in Texas the same afternoon. They get removed, and sometimes the listing goes with them.

Then reply

Every review, within a few days, in your own words. That deserves its own article, and it has one next week. For now: a listing that answers looks run by a person. A listing that does not looks abandoned.
